Public speaking course
Note: The public speaking course will not be offered in autumn 2017.
While the majority of people describe some mild-to-moderate level of discomfort with speaking in public, at least 20% of the population feel acutely nervous in the face of a presentation. This nervousness can manifest itself in many ways—some experience pronounced psychological discomfort and physical symptoms (such as shaking, vocal constraints, rapid heart-rate, mental “blanks”, etc.) when they go up to speak, while others find themselves actively worrying about (or making plans to avoid) a presentation event long before it’s due to happen. The good news is that most people can learn to handle their symptoms with the right tools, and with regular opportunities to practice.
What the course covers
This course aims to equip nervous speakers with a variety of strategies and techniques to improve their experience of presenting. In a small-group environment, we will work through a combination of relaxation exercises, mindfulness techniques, physical and vocal warm-ups, and concrete presentation skills to help equip you with the tools to manage nervousness, and build your confidence as a presenter.
The course also involves a gradual progression of short presentation exercises geared towards slowly confronting nervousness and feeling more comfortable in a speaking environment. For this reason, it’s important that you can commit to attending as many sessions as possible—as a group, you will function as each other’s audience and support, and it’s also vital that you continue to practice and develop on a regular basis.
