Lund University was founded in 1666 and for a number of years has been ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 42 000 students and 7 400 staff and we are all united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition. Across our eight faculties, the University offers one of the broadest ranges of programmes and courses in Scandinavia, based on cross-disciplinary and cutting-edge research. The compact university campus encourages networking and creates the conditions for scientific breakthroughs and innovations. The University has a clear international profile, with hundreds of international staff members and over 50 languages spoken on campus.

Steeped in centuries of tradition, Lund University has always been at the forefront of innovation with its modern and dynamic approach. Lund University has had the privilege of educating many Nobel laureates, prime ministers, a president and several notable leaders in society. Ultrasound, dialysis and the world’s fastest growing technology, Bluetooth, are all examples of revolutionary discoveries that have their roots in research at Lund University. Research at Lund University is known for its strong interdisciplinary focus and its cooperation with industry and business. Our interdisciplinary research and the diversity we offer as a comprehensive university have contributed to our success in recent years in obtaining major research grants. Over EUR 530 million a year goes to research at the university, which gives Lund one of Sweden’s strongest and broadest research environments. More than 30 of Lund’s research fields are world leading, according to independent evaluations.

Why Lund?

The University, with its three campuses in Lund, Malmö and Helsingborg, is located in one of the most dynamic regions in Europe. The Malmö region, including Lund, is the fourth most inventive in the world according to Forbes (Forbes: The World’s 15 Most Inventive Cities 2013). The business sector in Lund also boasts an impressive breadth of knowledge-intensive companies at the forefront in their fields. IdeonScience Park hosts some 200 companies which collaborate with Lund University and have helped to make Lund known worldwide for cutting-edge research and technology. Ericsson, Sony Mobile, Tetra Pak, Gambro and Alfa Laval are among the large, well-known companies located in Lund and with which the University cooperates. In addition, two of the world’s leading materials research facilities are being built in Lund: the MAX IV Laboratory and the European Spallation Source (ESS)

In Lund, nothing is far away and the proximity not only to research facilities and businesses in the region, but also to Copenhagen international airport, the city of Malmö, the hospital, schools, childcare, shops, restaurants, beaches, and leisure activities, is what makes the city so popular for families, as well as for students and staff members.

Why Sweden?

Sweden is a safe, modern and eco-conscious country with a great global reputation and among the world’s highest living standards. Sweden is ranked among the five best best countries in the world when it comes to providing higher education (Universitas 21 ranking 2015) and is one of the world’s most creative countries. There are more large internationally leading companies per capita in Sweden than in any other country and Sweden has a proud tradition of innovation and entrepreneurship. Sweden is an international environment and has one of the highest proficiency level in the world of English as a second language (90% of Swedes speak English according to the English Proficiency Index).

Sweden is among the countries with the highest number of researchers per million inhabitants, and around 3.5 % of the Swedish GDP is invested in reseach and development (UNESCO Institute for Statistics).

Equality and transparency are key factors in Swedish society along with a strong social safety net. Democratic principles shape not only the way Sweden is governed, but all levels of society — from nursery school to the workplace. Lund University, and most other universities in Sweden, are public and managed as government agencies. The Swedish universities are strong driving forces in Swedish society.
