Lund University is honoured with jubilee stamps

Lund University’s 350th anniversary is highlighted with two stamps produced by PostNord, Sweden’s postal authority. Although the stamps were first released on 10 November in Stockholm, today was the official ceremonial launch in Lund.

The ceremony that took place in the main University building was attended by the Vice-Chancellor Torbjörn von Schantz, designer Gustav Mårtensson, as well as the former Vice-Chancellor and chair of the jubilee committee, Göran Bexell:

“Having a stamp is really something, and we are delighted that the 350th anniversary of Lund University will now be a feature for all stamp-collecting enthusiasts, as well as for everyone who will want to use this stamp,” says Göran Bexell.

The selected stamp motifs highlight both the University’s history and the cutting-edge research conducted at the University.

One of them depicts the world-leading synchrotron radiation facility MAX IV, hosted by Lund University. The other depicts the sphinxes on the roof of the main University building. The frame surrounding the two stamps features a doctoral degree conferment ceremony and a student farce.

The stamps have been engraved by Lars Sjööblom. The original images were designed by Gustav Mårtensson from Lund, by processing photographs taken by Kenneth Ruona and Petra Francke. The pictures for the frame were taken by Gunnar Menander, Petra Francke and Gustav Mårtensson. The value of each stamp is SEK 13 and can be used as worldwide postage.

This is not the first time that Lund University has been honoured with its own stamp. In 1968 the University was honoured with its own stamps in celebration of its 300th jubilee. Back then the stamps cost 10 and 35 Swedish öre respectively.

On the 350th anniversary of Lund University

Lund University is celebrating its 350th anniversary with a jubilee that will begin on 19 December 2016 and last until 28 January 2018. The dates were selected to mark the founding and subsequent inauguration of the University. With this jubilee we want to present Lund University’s activities throughout history until today, and raise important issues for the future. Anyone who is interested is welcome to attend the upcoming anniversary celebrations that will include everything from thematic research weeks on current issues, exhibitions and cultural activities, as well as festive events. The programme for the entire year will be released on 19 December 2016 during the official inauguration of the jubilee.
